Just For Kids: Bladder & Potty Habits

Almost every kid will have problems with peeing or pooping sometime in their life. If you have problems during the daytime (accidents, always going, having to go in a hurry, or something else) then you probably have “bad potty habits”. Your body is probably giving you signs it needs to go, but you may be ignoring them or when you do go you don’t take your time and empty. Whenever you feel the urge to use the bathroom it is important to do so instead of “holding” and avoiding the restroom.

Even If You Do Not Get Urges, Still Go Often
Kids are busy and constantly going from one place to the other and it is difficult to take the time to go, relax, and completely empty. If you continue with bad potty habits a serious problem can develop and make it harder to correct.

When your bladder is full, your brain sends you a message that it is time to go use the restroom. You can voluntarily tighten your bottom muscles to hold back the pee or poop and try to go later. If you do this often, problems with going and emptying will occur. You may develop problems such as:
  • Daytime or nighttime pee accidents
  • Hard poops or problems going poop
  • Cannot all the pee out
  • Having to go pee all the time
  • Not being able to pee when you want
  • Having to pee in a hurry
  • Belly pain
  • Urine (pee) infections
  • An unwanted visit to the doctor
Each of these problems might be prevented if you make yourself go to the restroom often, relax your bottom muscles, and take your time in the bathroom. GO OFTEN AND GET EMPTY! Listed below are a few of the steps we recommend to get your potty habits on track. This may not come easy but try.
  1. You should use the restroom when you wake up, before you go to bed, and every two hours during the daytime. This includes school and sports.
  2. You should attempt to relax and stay in the restroom for 3-5 minutes. Boys should also sit down even when peeing.
  3. No caffeine drinks. Limited chocolates and carbonated drinks.
  4. Get on a poop program so you can poop 1-2 times a day
