Just For Kids: Constipation
Constipation-- Kids
get constipation just as often as old people. It is extremely common in
children because of “holding” and "bad" potty habits. Hard, large,
and painful poops can also occur because of diet and not drinking enough.
Kids with constipation may get really bad belly pains or even have poop
accidents. Again this is not something to be embarrassed about, but it is
an issue that you need to talk about. So talk to your parents or your doctor
about your poop problems so that you can get the help you need. If you do
not get help you may become so sick you need to go to the hospital or have
tests done.
What Causes Constipation?--
Constipation can be caused by any number of things, but “holding” and diet
are probably the most common problems in children. If your diet includes
eating a lot of dairy products (milk, yogurt, ice cream, cheese, etc.),
not eating many vegetables and fruit, and not drinking enough you may have
problems going poop.
What is "Holding?"-- Holding is something that everyone
does. It can, however, cause problems if it is done too often or for too
long of time. By tightening your bottom muscles you can prevent yourself
from having to go to the restroom until eventually the urge will pass. You
will need to poop at some time but if your bowel movements are held in too
long or too often they will become hard and dry. Then it will be hard or
hurt to poop.
If you hold for some specific reason, such as dirty bathrooms at school,
no privacy in the school bathrooms, etc. talk to your parents about the
issues so that something can be done about it. You will only hurt yourself
if you “hold” all day at school or while you are playing. Remember to go
even if you are watching TV or playing a computer game. If you really need
to go, use public restrooms even if they seem gross or dirty. It is no big
deal, everyone does it. Avoid problems by using the bathroom when your body
tells you to use the bathroom.
What Can I Do to Help Prevent Constipation?-- Some other
things that you can do to prevent hard, large and painful poops is to include
eating plenty of fruits and vegetables, and other foods that are high in
fiber. If you are eating a lot of dairy foods(milk and cheese), then you
may want to cut back on these foods for the time being. Make sure you are
drinking a lot of water or some other drinks. Exercise is always a good
idea.
