Just For Kids: Bedwetting
Bedwetting is very common. The
graph below shows the percentages of children between the ages of
1and 19 years old that wet the bed.
If you are a bedwetter it is not your fault.
It probably is the result of any one or any combination of the following:
- Your daytime potty habits may not be as good
as they need to be
- Your bladder may be smaller than other kids
- You may be producing more pee at night than
other kids
- You may be sleeping so deeply that you do
not wake-up when you need to pee
While it is true that most children will “grow
out of it,” it may take longer than you want. If you want
to speed up the process of becoming dry then there are several things
you can do. Some ideas that may help reduce your chances of having
a nighttime accident include:
- Limit the amount you drink before bedtime
and always avoid caffeine
- Improve your daytime pee and poop habits—this
will help
- Try a bedwetting alarm that might wake you
up as soon as you start to go
- Keep a diary or mark a calendar to remind
you of your progress with staying dry
- Consider using a medication that sometimes
helps bedwetting
There is no need to be embarrassed when talking
to your parents or your doctor about bedwetting. It is important
to talk with them or someone you trust about the issue so that they
can provide help and understanding. Remember you are not alone.
If you want, we will help you with all of the issues.
