Child Constipation Treatment Options
Laxative Use
If problems with constipation still persist then it may
be necessary to use a stool softener or mild laxative. Before using a
laxative for extended periods of time, you should consult your physician
to determine what type of laxative will work and how long your child should
remain on the laxative.
Diet
Diets rich in
fiber are very helpful (see the "Diets and Constipation" section).
Also children with constipation should drink plenty of liquids and avoid
constipating foods and drinks.
Improved Potty Habits
PottyMD strongly
suggests improving the bathroom habits of children. This involves starting
a program to increase bathroom visits and improving bladder and bowel
emptying. Our Overcoming Bladder and Bowel Problems in Children book specifically
addresses these issues and provides very successful treatment plans and
ideas.
